Rhinology is a specialised area within medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the nose and sinuses including issues with nasal air-flow, sinus drainage, recurrent infections, inflammatory conditions and allergies. Unlike purely cosmetic nasal procedures, rhinology addresses the function of the nose and sinuses.

As a Consultant Rhinologist and Facial Plastic Surgeon – with extensive further, specialist training in Otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat surgery), Head & Neck Surgery, Rhinology (the nose) and Facial Plastics – I am one of the country’s leading experts in cosmetic nose jobs which maintain the integrity and function of the nose. I also frequently see patients who have dual concerns, such as fixing a functional issue of their nose while simultaneously benefiting from a cosmetic enhancement. There are also those patients who are happy with the appearance of their nose and need functional treatment only.

Common functional rhinology complaints are:

  • Nasal Blockages: Structural or inflammatory causes of nasal obstruction, including enlarged turbinates and nasal valve collapse.
  • Rhinitis: Chronic inflammation of the nasal lining, whether allergic or non-allergic.
  • Nasal Polyps: Benign growths that obstruct airflow and contribute to sinus infections.
  • Sinus Issues: Chronic sinusitis, recurrent infections, and impaired sinus drainage.
  • Deviated Septum: A misaligned nasal septum that can cause breathing difficulties and congestion.

Diagnosis

When a patient sees me with a functional nose complaint, they likely don’t know what is happening inside the nose. Functional rhinology patients require precise and thorough diagnostics

  • Medical History: Understanding your symptoms—such as nasal congestion, sneezing patterns, reduced or absent sense of smell, recurrent colds and runny noses, blocked sinus and head pain – and what triggers them
  • Physical Examination and Endoscopy: In my clinic, I use a nasal endoscope to examine the nasal passages and assess inflammation or structural concerns. Many patients find it helpful to see real-time images of their nasal anatomy on the screen.
  • Allergy Testing: If allergic rhinitis is suspected, skin prick tests or blood tests can identify specific allergens. My team will arrange these tests and I will see you after for the results.
  • CT Scan: A CT scan may be recommended in some cases

Treatment Options

As both an ENT specialist and one of the UK’s leading cosmetic surgeon, I offer a unique approach to nasal and sinus treatments. This combined expertise ensures that patients receive both functional and aesthetic benefits from their care:

  • Comprehensive Understanding of Nasal Function: My ENT training ensures that nasal treatments go beyond appearance, focusing on restoring proper airflow and sinus drainage
  • Precision in Structural Corrections: Whether addressing nasal blockages, sinus disease, or a deviated septum, my approach prioritises both airway function and facial symmetry
  • Expertise in Rhinoplasty and Nasal Reconstruction: For patients requiring surgical intervention, I offer advanced techniques for even very damaged noses which other surgeons may not feel confident to treat
  • Minimally Invasive Techniques: Where possible, I use refined, minimally invasive procedures to reduce recovery time and optimise results.

The most important thing for me is that patients experience long-term relief and improved quality of life. For patients who struggle with chronic nasal obstruction, sinus infections, or breathing difficulties there is a knock-on effect in their day-to-day life: fatigue, illness, poor sleep and reduced energy. By addressing these concerns with tailored treatment plans, I help patients regain comfort, confidence, and quality of life Click here to make an enquiry.
