Enlarged Adenoids

Though adenoids are more commonly associated with childhood health concerns, they can remain enlarged or become problematic in adults, leading to persistent breathing difficulties, disrupted sleep, recurring sore throat,  ear discomfort and can even affect speech.

While a GP can assess symptoms that might suggest enlarged adenoids, this condition is relatively rare in adulthood and can sometimes be overlooked or mistaken for other issues like head colds or allergies. Many patients come to me after trying a variety of initial treatments already. If there are concerns about airway obstruction, an ENT consultation is highly recommended to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate management.

Diagnosis

Identifying enlarged adenoids as the cause of symptoms requires a comprehensive assessment:

  • Medical History: Adults with enlarged adenoids often experience chronic nasal congestion, snoring, mouth breathing, recurrent sinus infections or a blocked sensation in the throat. Some may struggle with sleep apnoea, fatigue or ear discomfort from obstructed air-flow.
  • Physical Examination and Endoscopy: In my clinic, I use a flexible endoscope to assess the size of the adenoids and their impact on breathing. This simple procedure is performed while you are awake in my office. It is well tolerated by most people and many patients are intrigued to see live images of their nasal passage and throat on the screen.
  • Further Investigations: If necessary, additional imaging such as an MRI may be recommended to provide a deeper understanding of the airway structures and rule out a more serious underlying issue.

Treatment Options

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we can explore tailored treatment options to restore comfort and function:

  • Medication: If inflammation or infection is contributing to symptoms, targeted treatments such as antibiotics or nasal corticosteroids may help reduce swelling and improve breathing
  • Adenoidectomy (Surgical Removal): For cases where enlarged adenoids obstruct breathing, contribute to recurrent infections, or cause sleep disturbances, removal of the adenoids is recommended. This straightforward procedure is highly effective in restoring normal airflow.
  • Lifestyle Adjustments: For milder cases, symptom management may involve nasal hygiene, hydration and avoiding environmental triggers such as allergens that exacerbate inflammation.

My approach is always tailored to each patient’s needs, ensuring they receive the most effective and reassuring care. If you think enlarged adenoids may be the cause of your ear, nose and throat issues and are interfering with your quality of life I strongly urge you to see a specialist ENT doctor.
